Prachuap Khiri Khan Province: Mango, durian and aloe vera growers in Pranburi district have been reeling from the impacts of drought conditions since March.
A prolonged dry season coupled with intense heat has resulted in dried-up water sources, causing agricultural crops to wither. One figure cited in local media pegs district output to have fallen by as much 10 fold — 20 tons, compared to the 200 tons harvested in the previous year.
The drought situation in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province has led to water shortages affecting various areas, impacting both domestic consumption and agricultural sectors across different districts. Mr. Apinya Sakdinnan, the district chief of Pran Buri, along with related agencies, village heads, sub-district administrative organizations in Nong Ta Muen and Khao Chao sub-districts, and agricultural officers, have been monitoring the impact of the drought in Pran Buri District, particularly on agriculture, which has been severely affected.
The mango orchards of Ms. Wanpen, a resident of Ban Pran, Nong Ta Muen sub-district, have suffered extensive damage, with trees dying due to water shortages, leaves becoming dry and brittle. Similarly, aloe vera crops and durian orchards in Khao Chao sub-district, around the headwaters of the Pran Buri River, which flows into the Pran Buri Dam, have also been affected. Some parts of the river have dried up, partly due to agricultural and local administrative organization efforts to dig up various points along the Pran Buri River, presumably for diversion purposes.
