2022 Vegetarian Festival in Prachuap Khiri Khan (Nine Emperor Gods Festival)

Every year for the past few centuries, communities with predominant Chinese heritage throughout Thailand observe a nine-day period in which they abstain from all vice, meat and animal products. There is a lot of ceremony and tradition that centers around the main Chinese shrines. The most famous location is in Phuket, where there are parades and all types of spectacles. Vegetarian, and more precisely, Chinese Vegan (Ahaarn Jay) is sold in various restaurants donning yellow flags. Some shrines also serve food for free.

The date each year varies, and depends on the Chinese Lunar Calendar. In 2022, the festival will be observed between 25 September – 5 October. During this period, you can find various restaurants throughout Prachuap Khiri Khan serving Chinese vegan food. These are typically concentrated near Chinese shrines. Look for the yellow triangle flags, and people in white.

Aside from Mueang district, there is reasonable sized festivities in other districts with large Thai Chinese populations and heritage, including in Hua Hin, Pranburi, Pak Nam Pranburi, Thap Sakae, Bang Saphan and Bang Saphan Noi.

The main dates to find food and ceremonies to mark the annual festival in Prachuap Khiri Khan will be between September 26 to October 4.
